St Patrick's Cathedral Dundalk Co.Louth

St Patrick's Cathedral is in Dundalk Co.Louth which is situated near the border between the Republic and Northern Ireland. This breathtaking Church is where I will be getting married next year. Feel free to leave a comment and tell me what you think.

St Patrick's Cathedral, Dundalk, Co.Louth.

Designed by Thomas Duff on the model of King's College Chapel, Cambridge. As at Armagh Cathedral, Duff died before completion and the interior was completed by J.J. McCarthy. The later tower of 1903 was modelled on another English church, this time Gloucester Cathedral by G.C. Ashlin.

It was proposed to build the tower further down, half-way along the nave so as to conserve the grand Cambridge-like main façade, but the work involved in altering the church to accommodate it proved unfeasible.

J.J. McCarthy completed the interior after the death of Duff - in 1860 when work resumed after the Irish Famine. McCarthy was commissioned to design the high alter and reredos. He also designed a memorial to a Reverend Coyne which was sculpted by Thomas Kirk. G.C. Ashlin was responsible for the later Italian mosaics in the chancel as well as the design of the pulpet and various embellishments to the interior.

Best Celtic Pubs in the South Side of Glasgow

My 3 favourite Celtic bars are in the South side of Glasgow. They are all situated in the Govanhill/Queenspark area.

Number 1 in my list must be Queenspark Cafe, which is based right at the bottom of Victoria Road beside Queenspark entrance. This pub is full of character from the people to the decor. You can feel the anticipation building throughout the fans as soon as you enter for an Old Firm or a Champion's League game. Overall the drink, the staff and atmosphere is top notch.

Second on my list must be Heraghty's which is located on Pollockshaws Road. Now this pub is a proper pub and serves the best pint of Guinness on the South side. Heraghty's is great for a late Thursday afternoon drink and celebrating after a Cup Final win at Hampden.

Last of all is Kelly's, this little gem can be found less than 50 yards down the road from Heraghty's. Kelly's pub has a large Donegal contingent and seems to be popular with a younger generation. This wee pub is great for a good old knee's up to some fantastic Irish bands and is still home to the Dean Park CSC.

If you disagree with me, why not take the poll at the right hand side of the page.
